Training Department: Taking on Many Roles

The training department team at Keno Kozie wears many hats. While they are there to onboard new employees that join the company, they also fill the role of “teacher/trainer” when it comes to keeping their law firm clients’ staff up to date with current technology.

When it comes to lawyers, keeping up with technology training has become as integral a part of the job as staying current with legal skills. There are many ways lawyers can get the training they need to keep pace with the technology that is out there. The most requested training for lawyers today includes PDF editing; better understanding of Word, Outlook, Excel, and macros that may be needed; demos of collaboration software and document management systems; and security awareness training – just to name a few.

The training department understands that as legal technology continues to evolve and advance, training methods need to keep pace. What they do has advanced beyond the traditional classroom setting and now can take many forms. While a high-level overview of new products may serve as a good introduction, being able to interact with new technologies in a hands-on environment gives a better experience and is known to help people adopt the technology easier.

Studies show that passive teaching techniques like lectures and demonstrations typically only achieve a 30% attention rate at best, whereas participatory methods raise that to between 50% and 90%. Hands-on practice results in an average of 75% retention rate of the material presented. This means that an immersive user experience is needed!   • Live classroom training – tends to be more interactive and provides an opportunity for attendees to get all their questions answered.
  • Virtual classroom training – simulates the live classroom setting without the extra travel and equipment costs.
  • Prerecorded training – allows training to be broken into shorter exercises on more discrete topics in a series of 5- to 15-minute videos that are easier to digest than a long presentation.
